Professor Paulo Gonçalves, the Founder and Director of the Humanitarian Operations Group, is a CSART Board Director, a Professor of Management at USI, and a Research Affiliate at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Prior to USI, Prof. Gonçalves held appointments at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the University of Miami Graduate School of Business. As a PhD candidate at Sloan, Paulo worked as an Intel scholar with Intel’s Strategic Capacity group, receiving the Intel Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Award (2003-2004). For his dissertation, he won the 2004 Doctoral dissertation award given annually by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). His research combines experiments, simulation, optimization, econometrics, and non-linear dynamics focusing on behavioral operations management in humanitarian contexts to understand and improve in strategic, tactical and operational management decisions.

Prof. Paulo is also a social entrepreneur, having founded and managed, SwissLeg an affordable high-mobility prosthetic social enterprise restoring mobility to destitute amputees in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Egypt. As SwissLeg CEO, Paulo was selected as a Venture Leader and Captain of the Swiss National Startup Team in 2013. Under Paulo’s helm, SwissLeg obtained the prestigious Swiss CTI label and won a number of awards, including Venture Kick (Stages I, II & III), Future Impact Prize 2012, Startups.CH 2013, Hub Zurich KickStart 2012, SEIF Social Entrepreneurship Award 2013, and the Best Entrepreneurial Idea of canton Ticino in 2013.
